In 1981 Loretta Swit played the role of Christine Cagney in the original television movie but couldn’t continue the role because the producers of M*A*S*H wouldn’t let her out of her contract.
When the movie was picked up as a series, Meg Foster played Cagney for the first six episodes. Foster was replaced by Sharon Gless because CBS thought Foster was too aggressive and would be perceived as a lesbian.
